YAPSnetwork event with our guest Cindy Poluta – May 2016
We hosted our bimonthly YAPSnetwork event last week at The Standard Bank Incubator in Rosebank with guest speaker Cindy Poluta from EWN (702 & 947). Cindy shared stories from her Portuguese upbringing and career path that had the crowd clapping and laughing all the way through with her fantastic sense of humour and impersonations of her Vovo.
After Cindy’s talk there were heated games of Bisca between our old YAPS members with some new members learning the game for the first time.
Thank you to everyone that attended and Standard Bank for the catering. We’ll see you at the next one!
There is the old adage: work hard; play hard. Well, YAPS and the South African Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (SAPCC) have managed to combine the two!
Yapsters, who are automatically affiliated with the SAPCC, enjoyed a bustling evening of networking with the leaders of Portuguese commerce. Entrepreneurs and corporate big guys were able to rub shoulders, mingle and forge new business alliances and relationships on the same playing field. This exchange of crucial details took place in 5 minute sessions of speed networking.
The evening was a huge success and was televised on RTP’s Hora dos Portugueses.

Obrigado to the SAPCC and Standard Bank for a prosperous evening!
25 February 2016
Bem vindo to 2016! The year of happiness.
Our first networking event of the year has started the social year off with a grande bang!
Thanks to Standard Bank for their spectacular new professionals offering they put together for our yapsters – first world advanced banking now in reach of the youth – free data, personal banker, black cards and travel offers; need we say more?
We devoured the delicatessens and kept the barista busy all night!
The only thing possibly smoother than Micasa is their lead singer J-Something! João is originally from Portimão in Portugal and arrived in ’95. Having adjusted to a plethora of diversity he has conquered – as the Portuguese do! – our land and hearts. This multi-talented marketing graduate, businessman, brand manager, singer song writer worked his way up from the bottom having started as a royalties sorter.
He met the rest of Micasa by chance at a family engagement party. A DJ was DJ’ing and a trumpeter was trumpeting. The planets aligned and our shy guy grabbed the mic and that was the first performance!
He is proud to be Portuguese but more importantly proud to be human. “We should never forget where we come from but we should focus on where we are going – to a beautiful world filled with different cultures.” This is his message – to unite people and instil a message of love and hope.
We were further graced with the presence of the Academia do Bacalhau members. As their youth wing, it was a great moment for us to share our evening with them.
As a registered NPO it was time for our AGM. 2015 was our best financial year and that enabled us to help individuals in serious need and the shelter for abused women and children.
Congratulations to our 2016 Committee:
Vice chair lady

FELIZ NATAL E BOAS FESTAS!
Merry Christmas to our wonderful YAPS members! We definitely ended this year on a high note. The merriment and goodwill of Christmas was tangible at our charity dinner. Café Duarte served up a mouth-watering three course menu and their ambiance, as always, was true to the Portuguese spirit. Once everyone arrived – Portuguese time is real! – we seated ourselves around generous mountains of food, glinting tinsel and the explosion of Christmas crackers. In the spirit of Christmas we even gave Nicole the night off and had our own Carlos DJ!
‘Tis the season and giving is what you do best. We were able to fill our cars to the brim with groceries and Christmas gifts which you donated. We delivered these to the Lovely Bears Crèche and Bienvenu Shelter on Saturday morning. The Crèche held their pre-school graduation which we were privileged enough to attend. Your gifts and donations lit up the faces of the kids, giving desperately needed love and hope to children who have had to grow up far too soon.
We wish you and your families a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!
IN THE MIX WITH DJ NICOLE DA SILVA
Standard Bank graciously hosted one of our epic networking events on Thursday 15 October 2015. The Standard Bank Incubator in Rosebank was booked to capacity. We are thrilled to have met the new YAPsters!
Standard Bank gave a prodigious presentation of their products designed for our YAPS members. Congratulations to the lucky winners who won prizes in the lucky draw. After the prizes, DJ Nicole da Silva: who needs no introduction here, took to the floor. We learned that Nicole is brains, beauty and all about the music. The BSC wielding local celeb kept us enthralled with her story of her rise to fame (we were amazed at the lengths she went to, to achieve and live her dream – truly an inspiration. Nicole’s story is about hard work – lots of hard work – add that to sheer determination and you will reach your goals. PS Nicole is also our vice chair lady!
The talented barista was kept busy while we mingled and did what we know best: festa! Yet again, as is the Portuguese way, good food, drink and familia resulted in a winning night.
The elegant setting of the Wanderers set the tone for the sophisticated evening honouring those in our Portuguese community who are and are fast becoming commercial powerhouses and promoting our culture and business dynamics in South Africa.
Naturally YAPS were in the spotlight!
Our vice chair lady, Nicole da Silva all but stole the show as a phenomenal MC.
This was the second gala dinner and was an awards evening. There are already over 900 Portuguese businesses registered with the SAPCC. Needless to say, the competition is tough!
The networkers were made up of everyone from small business owners to the Portuguese Ambassador. Not only were awards handed out to the background of live music and classical instruments but also prizes were given away; including a Hyundai, Emirates flights and a Tag Heuer!
Congratulations to everyone involved! We look forward to the third gala dinner!
The freezing Saturday night was certainly heated up by the stellar line up of our home grown DJs who relentlessly pleased the crowd beat after beat.
Just when we thought the festa had reached its peak MiCasa blew it right out of the water!
Partying vibes played off from the decks of Nicole Da Silva [5fm], DJ Ricardo Da Costa, Mickey Pereira, DJ Rix and Irmões De Deus kept our 500+ festa-nistas begging for more!
Então, we have listened and rest assured there will be mais mais mais!
The evening of the 6th of August encapsulated not only the usual fantastic fun, feasts, fellowship but also futebol! A massive obrigado to our home grown guest speaker the talented and inspiring Daniel Cardoso of Kaiser Chiefs. He held his own under fire from our soccer enthusiasts and most certainly impressed with his rise to fame! Well done to Marcio Mendonça and Rhoodie Garrana who won VIP tickets to our upcoming Festa featuring MiCasa (our next event on 5 September which should definitely not be missed!) A special thank you to Mercantile Bank for hosting and sponsoring this gathering – the venue and catering exceeded expectations!
A fantastic evening was celebrated between YAPS and Academia do Bacalhau Mãe (“Academia”) on 31 July 2015 marking the union between these two dynamic Portuguese groups. YAPS will be known as academia de juventude within the Academia framework. A special thank you to Manny Sampaio and Zé Contente (previous and current presidents of Academia) and Claudia Moreira (president of YAPS) for formalising the union between velho and novo! A feast of Portuguese delicacies was enjoyed familia style between the friends and family of YAPS and Academia and we thank you all for joining us!
Aqui é para o futuro!
